When the Dutch government takes measures to protect nature in the North Sea, it acts carefully and well informed by the most recent scientific knowledge. For this reason, the government cooperates closely with IMARES and ICES.
IMARES (Institute for Marine Resources & Ecosystem Studies) is part of Wageningen Uiversity and Research centre. It is a leading independent research institute whose work field is strategic and applied marine ecological research.
ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea) coordinates and promotes marine research in the field of oceanography, marine environment, ecosystem and fish stocks in the North Atlantic Ocean. ICES is a network of more than 1,600 scientists working at 200 institutes. They are all linked by an intergovernmental agreement. This liaison adds value to the separate national research efforts.
