Military use

Over 7% of the EEZ (4,200 km²) is used for military purposes, for example, as a military training ground. In some places, unused munitions have been dumped at some time in the past, for example in or after the Second World War. At military sites other forms of use are restricted. As not all military training grounds are in daily use, agreements have been reached about sharing military and civilian use.

The noise made by explosions and low flight training can have negative effects on the ability of marine mammals to find their way. Sound carries a great distance in water. It can disturb those marine mammals that use echo location to find their way and those that use sound to communicate with their fellows over great distances.
