Every season, the open space and vastness of the sea, beach and coastline attract countless visitors. They come for the sun and the beach fun or, at other times, well-dressed to brave the elements. They come to enjoy a breath of fresh air in natural surroundings, to swim or to cast a fishing line. The sea attracts people in all kinds of ways – and must continue to do so in the future.
As a Dutch citizen, you, too have a vested interest in the North Sea. The sea and coastline might offer you recreation or you might buy seafood in the supermarket. When you choose to buy responsibly caught, MSC-certified fish, you are supporting sustainable fishery. MSC is the abbreviation for Marine Stewardship Council, the body that promotes sustainably caught seafood. This global organisation manages the only ecolabel for seafood products. The certification programme and the MSC ecolabel recognise and reward sustainable fisheries. MSC cooperates with fishermen, the seafood-processing industry and the fish trade, scientists, nature conservation and environmental organisations and the consumer to promote the most environmentally friendly choice of fish and seafood products.
