Wind farms open for passage

Passage and co-use of offshore wind farms in the Netherlands' Exclusive Economic Zone of the North Sea.

As of May 1, 2018 three wind farms off the coast of the Netherlands are open for ships with a length up to 24 meters. These are the wind farms: Offshore Windpark Egmond aan Zee (OWEZ), Prinses Amalia Windpark (PAWP) just offshore IJmuiden and Luchterduinen (LUD) 12NM west of the coastal town of Noordwijk.

The code of conduct for a safe passage (pdf, 1.6 MB) contains rules and regulations that apply to a passage through a wind farm.


Access to wind farms is allowed between sunrise and sunset. The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) issued a table (in the Dutch language) containing information on daytime: Tabel opkomst en ondergang zon.


It is prohibited to make any contact with the seabed.Anchoring and, trawling are not allowed. In wind farms angling is the only kind of fishing allowed.

Gemini wind farms remain closed areas

The Gemini wind farms Buitengaats and ZeeEnergie up north, about 85km from the Dutch coast remain closed areas.
